Media workers and Trade unionists organized a rally in Colombo on August 10th to commemorate 200 days since journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda, was abducted. He was kidnapped around the time of the Presidential elections in Sri Lanka after writing articles critical of the government.
Around 1000 people participated in the rally at Viharamaadeevi stadium – which heard from many journalists and editors, as well as human rights lawyers – condemning the problem for journalists in Sr Lanka. Amnesty international claim that 14 journalists have been killed in Sri Lanka since 2006 and around 20 have left the country – making the condition in Sri Lanka worse for journalists than their colleagues in Iran.
